I do believe we can and should help the poor...that being said, we must also recognize that one of the biggest if not the biggest problems are the governments of Africa. They are the ones who keep the peoples in poverty because of their harden hearts.

That being said, I know of a ministry in Princeton WV named Heaven Sent Ministries that our church in Blacksburg, VA is going to partner with in getting aid, not just to Africa, but to other area's that not only need food, (one packet of their food makes 6 meals and the cost was 25 cents but because of the rise in rice it's about 50 cents now, still not bad!), but medical help as well.

Check out their website:

www.hsminc.org

You would assume that the church that started this mninistry would be 700-1000 strong but it is not the size of the church that is impressive, rather the size of their hearts. The church has around 125 that attend on Sundays. BTW, they not only help feed the poor overseas they do so at home as well. They are always looking at ways to partner with other churches not just for their money, but I believe that they insist that the church come and help package the food as well as pack it in the boxes. We plan on doing something at Tech in the coming school year and partner with a national missionary in the Congo.

We can and should be helping but I also think we must not forget that even if we feed and cloth etc. we MUST give them the truth of the gospel. With that one of the verses in the Word that really continues to impact me in all area's of my Christian living is Romans 5:8 "God demonstrated his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ Died For US!"

Let's get demonstrating...

EZAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202669954875111936.post-26259915693541639662008-06-20T16:18:00.000-04:002008-06-20T16:18:00.000-04:00i can hear myself a few years ago talking about ho...i can hear myself a few years ago talking about how we need to be careful with over-emphasising social needs above peoples gospel need. how do we figure? and how have we separated the two? i hope we heed his message as well as the message of the many faithful christians who are giving thier lives to share everything they have with the poor people of this world in order to create a community of faith (aka church) among them, (as well as the message of christ in mt 25:31-46). i am falling way short...
rich american white boys saying that people need the gospel more than they need drinking water is absurd unless we are willing to take our wealth and share it with our fellow humans in the context of community (isnt that what the early church did?). what greater way to share/demonstrate the message of reconciliation to God than next to some one you just built a roof for. better yet, what better way to start a church...
-kristopherhassanpourhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17752545494534061885noreply@blogger.com
